Just days after formally announcing the launch of the company and a $400 USD esports certification program, the Esports Certification Institute (ECI) announced Wednesday evening that it was halting its plans and refunding money to anyone who had already paid for the program.
The change in course for the company was the direct result of widespread criticism of the program from the esports industry and the community at large.
In a post on social media, ECI co-founder Ryan Friedman explained why the company was rethinking its plans:
“We appreciate the feedback that everyone has given, and we’ve made the decision to take down the ECI certification. While I still firmly believe that esports can benefit from improvements in the hiring process, what we offered clearly was not the right course of action.”
We will have more on this story as it develops.
