Hearthstone announces new expansion, Scholomance Academy

Do you remember the necromancer’s school, Scholomoancy Academy, from World of Warcraft? Well, whether you do or not, you’re getting an entire Hearthstone expansion based on it with over 135 new cards. Here’s what you need to know about the CCG’s newest expansion, set to release in August.

Scholomance Academy introduces Dual-Class cards

Traditionally in Hearthstone, each class had cards that only they could use. In Scholomance Academy, there will be cards that two classes can use. Here’s a list of the classes that will share cards:

  • Druid/Hunter
  • Hunter/Demon Hunter
  • Demon Hunter/Warlock
  • Warlock/Priest
  • Priest/Paladin
  • Paladin/Warrior
  • Warrior/Rogue
  • Rogue/Mage
  • Mage/Shaman
  • Shaman/Druid

Each of these classes tends to share similar cards. For example, Druids and Hunters both use beasts, and Warriors and Rogues both use weapons.

As with every new Hearthstone expansion, there is a new mechanic in Scholomance Academy. If a minion in play has Spellburst, it will activate its effect when a spell is played. These effects are different for each card. Here are some examples:

Spellburst should help usher in new deck archetypes that use spells to activate certain effects. This could pave the way for new spell-based decks, assuming the Spellburst cards are worth playing.

New game mode

Blizzard also teased a new game mode in its Scholomance Academy announcement. As of right now in Hearthstone, you can play Standard, Wild, Arena, Tavern Brawl, and Battlegrounds. “Let’s not forget—a new game mode is on its way as well,” the company stated. It will be interesting to see what kind of game mode this will be.

Expect more announcements about Scholomance Academy in the coming weeks. There is no official release date yet, but the new expansion will arrive in early August. You can log in to Hearthstone now to get a free Transfer Student card. Be sure to check it out and stay tuned for more!
