Earlier today, an Infinity Ward developer confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone will live on in future titles. Essentially, this means that Warzone won’t be an exclusive title to Modern Warfare. With every new sequel in the Call of Duty franchise, Warzone will evolve with whatever that title is. So, for example, in 2020 we presumably have Black Ops: Cold War. When that eventually releases, Warzone will undergo changes to match the setting and tone of that game. What this exactly means is unclear, but previous leaks could give us an insight.
Warzone to evolve with future Call of Duty titles
Back in June, a leak from a reputable source indicated that Warzone will be left behind. This happened to Blackout in Black Ops 4, as Infinity Ward was designing its own battle royale and didn’t have any need for Blackout.
However, it seems Treyarch, the developers for CoD 2020, won’t be designing a new BR. Instead, they’ll simply use Warzone and update it in accordance with the various Black Ops: Cold War seasons. This should be similar to how Infinity Ward has done it with Modern Warfare.
In the words of Infinity Ward’s Design Director Geoff Smith to GamesRadar: “Although Warzone is very closely tied to Modern Warfare, it was designed from the beginning as its own game,” says Smith. “As the game continues to be updated over time, it will evolve and become tied to other games in the Call of Duty universe.”

So, what can players expect from the battle royale later in 2020 and 2021? Presumably, Warzone will undergo significant map changes and possibly weapon additions and subtractions. We’ve already heard rumors of a redesign for the map of Verdansk to fit the reported Cold War era of the 2020 title. This means new locations and a new environment as a whole.
In terms of weapon changes, we haven’t heard much. However, we can assume that Treyarch will introduce some classic Black Ops weapons to the loot pool. Although, we can’t envision the developers removing every current Warzone weapon for newer models. An updated Warzone will likely have a mix of Modern Warfare and Black Ops weapons and equipment, which is great for the community as a whole.
