Tournament operator Esports Entertainment Group has entered into an agreement with Major League Soccer team Philadelphia Union to become the organization’s official esports tournament provider. The company will host tournaments on its Esports Gaming League platform with prizes of team merchandise and fan experiences provided by Philadelphia Union.
The soccer franchise becomes the latest in a growing list of traditional sports entities looking to reach a younger demographic through esports. The trend has gained significant traction in 2020 due the cancellation of most major sporting events as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The Union has been active in FIFA esports since early 2018, signing Cormac “Doolsta” Dooley as its first representative for the eMLS Cup as well as hosting local esports events in partnership with Philadelphia-based esports event organizer Nerd Street Gamers. Earlier this year, the organization also signed former Philadelphia Eagles player Jay Ajayi as an eMLS competitor.
