Worlds 2020 Hype Remains Strong Moving Into Group Stage – Weekly Twitch Top 10s, Sept. 28 – Oct. 4

The League of Legends World Championship will be unchallenged as the most-watched esports event of 2020, should current trends sustain through the remainder of the tournament. It’s biggest competitors in Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive lost their international championship events for the year, and no other title has the legacy and brand cache of Worlds.

The Top of Twitch – The 2020 League of Legends World Championship

Aside from Among Us falling off slightly, there is little to note this week beyond the sheer dominance of League of Legends as a result of Worlds 2020 moving into its group stage. Last weekend, the very best teams in the world took the stage for the first time in the competition, leading to a surge in viewership. Of the game’s 40.73M hours watched (surpassing Just Chatting for the week), the main Riot Games channel accounted for 7.78M. The Korean broadcast also made it into the top 10, and combined, these two channels accounted for roughly a quarter of the game’s viewership for the week.

Worlds still has a long way to go before it’s done, though as the tournament progresses, it is important to note that its hours watched metric will be influenced by a reduction in the number of games played across fewer days as teams are whittled down to just two for the final match.
