It looks like the modern-day segments of Assassin's Creed will be taking a bit of a backseat in future installments, as Mirage has been confirmed to focus exclusively on Basim, while Infinity will feature the player as the main character and focus more on the past.
Yesterday was a big day for the future of Assassin's Creed, with the reveal of the next few games in the series. Assassin's Creed Mirage is the next one to come in 2023, while Assassin's Creed Infinity is coming at a later date and will act as a platform for the series moving forward, with two games for it detailed so far – Codename Red and Codename Hexe.
One thing was glaringly missing from any of the footage of Infinity and Mirage – there was no sign of any modern-day characters or storylines, and it seemed focused entirely on the past. The first confirmation we have that that's the case comes from Game Rant, who interviewed Mirage's creative director Stephane Boudon about the game's story.
Boudon said, "No, we decided to not put in any present-day or future playable missions in Assassin's Creed Mirage because we wanted to really focus on the story of Basim when he was in Baghdad in the Ninth Century. So, you are still in the Animus obviously. It's core to the Assassin's Creed franchise, so you will start with Animus and there's also an ending, but we won't have any gameplay for present-day during the whole game."
As for Infinity, IGN interviewed project leader Marc-Alexis Côté, who said, "People who love just immersing themselves in the past will be able to jump right in there and never be interrupted or need to know who Desmond and Layla is. The way we tell the story will evolve with time. It's something that we're doing for the long term, not for the short term. But the abstraction that we want people to have is [Infinity] is your Animus. It is your DNA explorer on your desktop. You are the main story character."
From these two interviews, it's pretty clear that we won't be having any playable modern-day protagonists for some time, as Mirage is outright avoiding it, while Infinity is having the player control themselves and have their own Animus instead of a set defined character.
