Bethesda Game Studios has its schedule planned out for the next decade or more, but don’t expect any other new IP like Starfield.
When Starfield is released next year it’ll be Bethesda Game Studios’ first large scale single-player game in over seven years, following the release of Fallout 4 in 2015.
Bethesda’s style of open world action role-playing game takes time to make and while The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced way back in 2018 there’s no expectation that it’ll be out for several years yet.
It’s always been assumed that Fallout 5 will be after that and now Bethesda has confirmed exactly that, but it’s clear that it’ll be lucky to even come out this decade.
The last time (indeed, the only time) Bethesda has mentioned Fallout 5 was when last year they admitted it existed only as a one-page design document.
With two major games scheduled ahead of it there doesn’t seem to have been any time to do more than that but nevertheless studio director Todd Howard has confirmed that Fallout 5 is definitely his next game after The Elder Scrolls 6.
Speaking to IGN, Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in pre-production, which suggests it’s still at least three years away from completion. Assuming Fallout 5 takes at least five years to make from scratch, you are talking a release date of around 2030.
Howard admitted that, ‘our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while. We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well.’
Although Fallout 4 was their last big single-player project, since then they’ve also worked on the likes of Fallout 76 and mobile title The Elder Scrolls: Blades, so that’s likely the sort of project he’s alluding to. Although there’s also rumours of Obsidian working on a sequel to New Vegas.
That’s all the detail he went into though, with the focus of the interview naturally being on Starfield, including how long the game is and how many major cities it will feature.
It’s worth remembering that Starfield itself doesn’t have a specific release date yet, just sometime in the first half of next year, and could easily be delayed further.
