Laid-Off Twitter Employees Lose IT Access Overnight

Twitter employees included in Elon Musk's mass layoff seemingly aren't being told that they're fired. Instead, it appears that many are waking up to the news that they've lost their job, discovering that their IT access was revoked overnight.

Now former Twitter workers are taking to social media to share how they are losing their jobs, often having their passwords changed and their access to Slack removed without explanation. This is also preventing them from discussing the layoffs with coworkers – not the first time a company owned by Musk has taken steps to prevent potential organization.

"Looks like I’m unemployed y’all. Just got remotely logged out of my work laptop and removed from Slack," says Simon Balmain, a now-former community manager at Twitter.

Chris Younie, who worked in entertainment partnerships at Twitter, shared a similar experience. "Well this isn’t looking promising. Can’t log into emails. Mac won't turn on," he says. "But so grateful this is happening at 3am. Really appreciate the thoughtfulness on the timing front guys."

Despite the chaos this has caused among workers, the layoffs were expected. It was reported on October 21 that Musk planned to cut the workforce down by a staggering 75 percent, seeing roughly 7,500 employees out of work.

Even those that have kept their jobs aren't out of the woods yet. With Twitter reportedly set to be brought down to a skeleton crew of 2,000, workers are having to pull 12-hour shifts to implement site changes dictated by Musk. This includes the controversial plan to charge $8 a month for Twitter verification. In one instance, Twitter developer Esther Crawford was photographed sleeping in the office after a long shift.

Musk went ahead with the layoffs despite the fact that workers had already filed a class action lawsuit against the company accusing it of breaching Californian employment law. The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) act states that employees must be given 60 days' notice before layoffs of this kind are carried out. With Musk only being on the job since late October, workers were very clearly not given this notice.
