New Sonic Frontiers artwork has just been shown off at Tokyo Game Show, and it's pretty interesting. While there's not too much info to glean from it, the art suggests that Sonic's pals will play a larger role than initially thought. The piece also gives us our first official confirmation that Knuckles will be there, as well as Tails and Amy.
However, the real stars of the show here are the Koco – basically the new Chao. The Koco are small rock creatures, and according to the poster, each member of the Sonic gang has one as a pet. Each Koco even adopts the characteristics of its owner, even more reminiscent of the pet Chao we looked after in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.
This new promotional artwork has been warmly received by fans, who are eager to analyse any piece of Frontiers content we can get our hands on. Much of the game is still under wraps, with Sega seemingly eager to keep it shrouded in mystery.
But from this latest update, it appears Frontiers will give us a long-awaited Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles team-up once more. The last time we had this was Sonic Boom, which isn't even canon, and featured different iterations of the characters. Before that, the last one that came close to a team-up like this was Sonic '06, but I don't think any of us are in a rush to count that.
We don't know much about the Koco so far, other than that collecting them in-game will boost Sonic's stats, and even his maximum ring count. Hopefully, we'll have a way to hang out with them after they're collected and dropped off to the Hermit Koco and Elder Koco, just as we did with Chaos.
As for the Sonic gang, it was already hinted that Knuckles would make an appearance, as it was confirmed that he would be in an animated prolougue to the game. Some fans even managed to find Knuckles in Frontiers' Gamescom demo, after they got much further into the game than Sega anticipated. This is the first time we've seen the crew together though, but hopefully not the last time.
Sonic Frontiers is set to launch November 8, 2022. It will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
