After a fan tweeted out a video asking about the possibility of “bisexual Ryuji”, one Persona 5 voice actor offered his thoughts on the matter.
Ryuji Sakamoto (aka “Skull”) is one of the main characters from the popular Atlus JRPG Persona 5 and its enhanced edition Persona 5 Royal. Known for his bleached blonde hair, rebelliousness, and his iconic catchphrase “For real?!”, the Phantom Thief has become a fan-favorite character for “phans” of the game. He’s become so huge, that it’s incredibly easy to find a multitude of fanart, fanfiction, and even fancams of the character online.
Speaking of fancams, one such example was recently tweeted out by Twitter user @catboyyosuke. The Ryuji fancam is set to the song “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood and features clips of the blonde character. The clips included iconic moments of Ryuji in battle, as well as some scenes of him during his confidant ranks with the Protagonist. The fancam also is decorated with the phrase “bi rights!” repeatedly filtered over the video.
Though Ryuji predominantly talks about his attraction to other female characters in the Persona 5 franchise, many fans have picked up on his emotional interactions with the male Protagonist, his bromance with Yusuke, and other moments. This has led many to speculate that Ryuji could be bisexual, especially given that his sexuality is never explicitly stated in the game.
In their fancam tweet, @catboyyosuke tagged Max Mittelman, the English voice actor for Ryuji, along with the message, “hello again now that you have acknowledged my existence i am legally required to ask for ur opinion on bi ryuji”
Mittelman, who noticed the tweet, replied back with a short, but affirming, “I mean, probably.”
The tweet, though short, appeased many fans, who began replying to Mittelman’s tweet thanking and praising him for sharing his thoughts on Ryuji’s sexuality. A number of Twitter users also quote retweeted Mittelman’s reply celebrating the recognition of bisexual Ryuji.
While there is still no official confirmation from Atlus regarding Ryuji’s (or any of the other Persona 5 characters’) sexuality, it is definitely very exciting to see the voice actor behind this beloved character affirming a popular headcanon in the Persona fandom.
Persona 5 Royal is available now, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
