Phil Spencer teases 1 vs 100 revival for Xbox Series X

The old Xbox 360 trivia game could be revived for the Xbox Series X, something Phil Spencer has admitted to wanting before.

On Friday, Xbox head Phil Spencer took part in an Xbox FanFest livestream, which was supposed to run alongside an online quiz.

Due to technical issues, the quiz could not be held but it did lead to Spencer suggesting that Microsoft make its own trivia game, which quickly led to speculation from fans.

‘Maybe we should even be building our own trivia game, like from our past, that allows people to play a trivia game more often, maybe that could happen,’ he said.

His comment can be heard in the video recording below at around the 6:30 mark, which was done by a fan who watched the stream.

Spencer referring to a game from the past has many jumping to the conclusion that he was referencing 1 vs 100.

For those who may not know, 1 vs 100 was initially a TV game show and was later adapted into an online title for the Xbox 360 in 2009.

How it worked was one player would be chosen as ‘The One,’ while another 100 players would be ‘The Mob.’

A question would be posed and if The One gets it right, any players who were part of The Mob, and got it wrong, would be eliminated.

If The One gets the answer wrong, the game ends and the winnings are divided between the Mob members.

1 vs 100 offered actual prizes, such as Microsoft Points and free games but, despite its popularity, it only lasted two seasons and ended in 2010.

As for why people are assuming this is what Spencer was referring to, he did say last year that ‘We should do it again,’ with the only problem being that Microsoft doesn’t own the IP.

‘The problem with 1 vs 100 specifically is it’s an IP that’s owned by a a game show company. But I’ll say Matt [Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios] and I have had a lot of discussions about the idea, whether it’s that IP specifically or just the idea of what it was, is something that we’d love to go do,’ he said in an interview with Stevivor.

Unless Microsoft has or is able to strike another deal to bring 1 vs 100 back, it’s possible that it is instead working on its own online quiz show that functions similarly for the Xbox Series X/S.
