Not only is Insomniac working on Spider-Man 2, with Kraven the Hunter as a key bad guy – but they’re also making a separate Wolverine game.
Whatever other differences there might be between the two companies, Sony has always been much better than Microsoft at putting on a show, whether live or merely livestreamed, and things were no different for the PlayStation Showcase on Thursday night.
As hoped, God Of War: Ragnarök was finally unveiled but the biggest surprise was not just Spider-Man 2 but also a Wolverine game, both of which are being made by Insomniac Games.
The studio has been steadily growing in size but even so, it doesn’t seem as if either game will be out any time soon, with Spider-Man 2 not due until 2023 and Wolverine not given a date of any kind.
The Wolverine reveal was ‘not actual gameplay’ and basically showed nothing except some poor fool approaching Wolverine with a knife, as he sits at an abandoned bar.
In the PlayStation Blog, it’s revealed that the game will be directed by the same team behind Spider-Man: Miles Morales (for our money a notably better game than the original Spider-Man) but that’s all the extra information at the moment.
This will be the third Marvel character to become a PlayStation exclusive, after Spider-Man and Iron Man (although he only got a VR game), but while the PlayStation Blog seems to imply they are part of a connected universe that’s never been clear from the games themselves yet.
You did get quite a bit more information on Spider-Man 2 though, if you know your comic books, with the narration clearly coming from supervillain Kraven the Hunter, even though he’s never actually seen.
What you do get to see is Venom, who was already hinted at during the end of the first game, and Miles Morales, who is seen working hand-in-hand with Peter Parker.
Although you’d imagine that might be a hint at some kind of co-op mode the game is specifically described as a ‘single-player adventure’ by Insomniac.
We’re not sure who the woman with the swords was but she and the man are possibly just generic mercenaries. You can see Parker is clearly wearing the Iron Spider suit at one point though, which is neat.
2023 is a long way off, so it might also be a while till you hear more on the game, but since Spider-Man 2 has been confirmed as a PS5 exclusive that means Wolverine certainly will be as well.
