Saints Row Review Round-Up

The Saints Row reboot is coming tomorrow, so it's about time we learn what leading outlets think about it. In short — it seems that Saints Row isn't turning out to be a big summer hit.

TheGamer's Editor-in-Chief Stacey Henley rated the game six out of ten, and hasn't got too much good to say about the action title. In her opinion, 2022's Saints Row is a throwback to the 2008-2013 gaming era, and not in a good sense. "The attempt to reboot the story is a massive whiff," she wrote. "Saints Row is taking something popular from the series, making it worse, then wedging it back in. Original thoughts are few and far between."

Here's a look at some other scores Saints Row is getting across other publications:

  • Game Informer — 8.5/10
  • Destructoid — 8/10
  • Push Square — 7/10
  • IGN — 6/10
  • Gamespot — 6/10
  • VG247 — 6/10
  • Game Rant — 5/10
  • VGC — 4/10

Currently, the reboot stands at 6.5 out of 10 on OpenCritic and 6.2 out of 10 on Metacritic (the PS5 version). Compared to the previous titles in the series, the all-new Saints Row seems to get the lowest scores of the pack. For example, back in 2013, Saints Row 4 earned 8.1 out of 10 from critics on average, while Saints Row: The Third was rated 8.4 out of 10 at the time.

So, what went wrong here? Well, it is said that Saints Row is occasionally fun to play, with some interesting mission design, decent driving, and fine shooting. On the other hand, the game's open world is below average by modern standards; its graphics are sometimes rough around the edges, and the new cast of characters is uninspired and even obnoxious. Also, the game still suffers from plenty of technical issues and bugs, even though it has been delayed for six months. If you're a die-hard fan of the series, it's probably not a bad move to wait for some patches to land before you dive in.

Saints Row will be available starting tomorrow, August 23, while copies of the game have appeared at retailers a few days earlier, with some players already getting their hands on Saints Row and sharing impressions.
