Bethesda has released a new video that gives a much better idea of what Starfield is about than the trailer, including multiple new worlds.
It’s hard to say what’s been the biggest story of E3 2021 so far but while it should be Starfield, given how long people have been waiting to hear about it, Bethesda didn’t really say much about it during the reveal at the weekend and the trailer didn’t explain a lot either.
The video below is, by comparison, a lot more informative, with a few new hints about the tone of the game and a lot of concept art.
There’s been a lot of confusion amongst fans since Bethesda described the game as a Han Solo simulator, which seems to be true only in the broadest sense of you own a spaceship and can go anywhere you want.
The universe implied by the concept art shows something more grounded than Star Wars, with so far no sign of aliens (although perhaps the image with the rocky planet has some, possibly non-sentient, ones).
The back story remains unclear, but the video voiceover suggests that you’re a member of an organisation called Constellation, ‘the last group of space explorers’.
According to the video Starfield is, ’a next generation role-playing game where you’ll be who you want, go where you want; experience our stories and forge your own’.
‘Starfield’s about hope, our shared humanity, and searching for the answers to life’s greatest mystery’, claim Bethesda.
More insight into the design process is promised in the future, implying that new nuggets of information will be released on a fairly regular basis.
For now though this concept art gives the impression of a much larger and varied universe to explore, compared to the rather unexciting trailer.
