Phil Spencer talks about the possibility of access to hardware for Xbox Game Pass users, including TV streaming sticks for xCloud.
Microsoft is obviously going all in with the Xbox Game Pass and making it a key part of the Xbox Series X/S advertising, which is no surprise given its popularity.
According to The Verge, Microsoft may very well have further plans for the Game Pass in the future, namely an additional tier.
Xbox head Phil Spencer recently took part in an interview with Stratechery, where he dubbed this potential new tier Xbox Game Pass Platinum.
While such a theoretical tier would likely be more expensive, Spencer suggests that Platinum users would benefit from guaranteed access to new Xbox hardware. For example, a TV streaming stick for Microsoft’s cloud gaming service.
Formally known as Project xCloud, but now called Cloud Gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (we’re still going to call it xCloud), it allows users to play Xbox titles on their mobile or tablet device.
A streaming stick you can plug into your TV would let users access xCloud and play the games via the TV itself, presumably working similarly to the Chromecast dongles used by Stadia.
‘I think you’re going to see lower priced hardware as part of our ecosystem when you think about streaming sticks and other things that somebody might want to just go plug into their TV and go play via xCloud,’ said Spencer.
‘You could imagine us even having something that we just included in the Game Pass subscription that gave you an ability to stream xCloud games to your television and buying the controller.’
Access to additional hardware is certainly an inviting proposition, but it’s simply an idea at the moment and there’s no knowing when or if Microsoft will make it a reality.
Indeed the whole Xbox Game Pass Platinum concept may not happen at all, as Spencer seems to discuss it only as a possibility.
