Xbox One consoles have already been discontinued claim retail sources

Both Amazon and Target in the US seem to have labelled the entire Xbox One console line as discontinued, as the Xbox Series X prepares for launch.

Insiders have already warned that the Xbox Games Showcase in two weeks’ time will take its name very literally, with little chance that it will reveal the price of the next gen Xbox Series X console.

How much it will talk about hardware, and services like Game Pass, is unclear but it seems like Microsoft is preparing for a major console announcement, given that Amazon now lists all models of the Xbox One, including the Xbox One X, as discontinued.

That could be some kind of mistake but a post on Reddit suggests that Target in the US has also listed them as discontinued on their internal system, meaning that the consoles will never be back on shelves once the ones currently in stock are all sold out – with the only exception being limited editions such as the Cyberpunk 2077 edition.

Although the Xbox Series X was always going to replace the Xbox One eventually it seems surprising that Microsoft would discontinue the current gen consoles months before the next gen has even started.

Especially when new games are going to be labelled as compatible with both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X, with many sporting Optimized for Xbox Series X logos.

On the other hand, Microsoft has long hinted that there will be several models in the Xbox Series X line, including the much-rumoured Xbox Series S/Lockhart and perhaps others such as the recently discovered reference to a device codenamed Edinburgh.

It may be that Microsoft intends to launch an entire line of new consoles all at the same time, completely replacing the Xbox One with different models available at different price points.

Discontinuing them now does seem early but it’s unlikely to be a signal of a surprise launch and more likely merely an indication that summer is not a busy time for hardware sales, especially when most customers know the next gen is imminent.

Perhaps we’ll find out for certain what’s going on though, when the Xbox Games Showcase starts at 5pm on Thursday, 23 July.
