Yakuza live action movie beginning development, new game reveal rumoured

Sega is bringing the Yakuza series to the silver screen for the second time with a new movie, with talk of a new game reveal this weekend.

Following the success of the Sonic The Hedgehog movie, Sega is, unsurprisingly, planning on adapting of another one of its most successful franchises: Yakuza.

This report comes from Variety, which confirms that said movie is being developed by 1212 Entertainment (Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark) and Wild Sheep Content.

Erik Barmack, whose credits include TV shows like Quicksand and Sacred Games, will serve as producer, alongside Roberto Grande and Joshua Long.

1212 and Wild Sheep are still looking for writers to pen the script, so probably don’t expect this one to release anytime soon.

‘Yakuza offers us a new playground in which to set compelling stories with complex characters in a unique environment that audiences have rarely seen before,’ says 1212.

‘The saga of Kazuma Kiryu has a built-in cinematic appeal – a mix of kinetic action with bursts of comedy, multiple converging storylines, and a gripping journey towards redemption.’

This statement seems to confirm that the film will focus on main protagonist Kiryu and will most likely adapt the events of the first game. This is a tad ironic considering the character was effectively retired after Yakuza 6, with a new protagonist taking over in the upcoming Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

Diehard fans of the series will know that there is already a live-action adaptation of the first game, which released in 2007 in Japan and was directed by renowned filmmaker Takashi Miike.

The new film doesn’t seem to have any Japanese creatives involved.

In related news, it’s believed that a new Yakuza game is to be announced this weekend as part of the Tokyo Game Show.

Ayana Tsubaki, one of the hosts for the Sega Nama broadcast, tweeted that the ‘latest work’ of the Yakuza series will be announced during said broadcast, which is to take place on Sunday, 27 September.

The tweet has since been deleted, but it can still be viewed via Google cache (via Gematsu) and fans have already theorised what it could be, with suggestions including a remake of Yakuza 3, a Western release of the Japan exclusive Ishin games, or even a sequel to spin-off title Judgment.

It’s important to note that the tweet may have been deleted due to it being false information, so it’s best we take it with a pinch of salt for the time being.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon will release on 10 November for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S and then 13 November for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It will come to PlayStation 5 at a later date.
